What you'll do
The Viasat Mobility Energy team services oil & gas customer telecommunications requirement using VSAT (fixed & Stabilized terminals), PtP/LOS, Fiber optics, LTE & Radio systems to connect to the customer site infrastructure and telecoms systems. The Viasat offshore technicians team will install, commission and maintain the offshore systems supported by the onshore staff of Build & Test, Coordinators and Project Managers as well as the customer support center (CSC). The Build & Test Technician position provides an organized, priority driven & controlled support- function between the offshore Technicians and onshore support team in delivering the hardware parts list, configured by the responsible engineer or by Build & Test to meet the scope defined by the coordinators & project managers. The Build & Test technician will receive equipment through stores from suppliers, returned rental hardware or RMA equipment and follow a process for project assignment, test prior to returning equipment to stock or disposal. The Build and Test Technician controls the build area and inventory of stock including test equipment, large small systems components as well as consumable items including; cables, connectors and a variety of other install equipment whilst keeping the area and inventory well organized in a busy quick paced telecoms environment.
The successful candidate will utilize their technical knowledge and experience to complement the off and onshore staff and be willing to learn new skills and work with uncertainty under tight timelines.
The day-to-day
The build & test technician will work in the westhill office and manage a priorities and reporting through the servicenow platform to organize and coordinate the work with support engineers, coordinators, project managers, warehouse to achieve:
- Inventory is maintained to a managed and organized level enabling quick working practices
- The work area is clear, accessible and managed for safe and efficient working
- Test and verification of Comtech CnC, IDirect, newtech satellite Modems
- Test of VSAT BUCs 200W to 25W on the RF Test Bench
- Test of UPS’s 120V & 240 V 3 to 5 Kva in the UPS racks
- Test and preparation of Fiber Optic cables single mode & multimode
- Test and build of LTE System enclosures and provision of complete LTE Systems for delivery offshore
- Test & build of Uplogix out of Band Systems
- Assembles and tests submeter and 1.2 fixed and stabilised VSAT terminals ( LEO & GEO) ready for shipment offshore
- Test and configuration of Motorola radio equipment, base station, relays & hand held units
- Management of hardware lists delivered by the support staff and to organise the hardware into deliveries for warehouse packing and processing to customer site
- Management of coordinator & project manager assigned project shelves with equipment
- Management of the RMA & Returns processes ensuring all returned equipment is tested and, processed for RMA repair or disposal
- Is accountable to manage the service now work que closing out tasks and raising issues for resolution as they arise
- Complies with all VIASAT, customer and regional compliance, HS&E and QA policies and regulations
What you'll need
- HNC\HND Electrical/Electronic/ Computer engineering qualification
- 3 years experience in a telecommunications role
- Stabilized (Intellian, Seatel) & Fixed VSAT experience including familiarity with satellite modems and installation.
- GVF Certifications relevant to VSAT
- Approved Fibre training (splicing and measurement)
- Proven experience for termination of coaxial and electrical cables
- Electrical termination CompEx certification an advantage
- Motorola radio programming and fault finding
- Proven experience of electrical & Electronics
- Proven knowledge of basic LAN network infrastructure hardware, cabling & test
- Proven knowledge of associated test equipment (Spectrum Analyser, RF Power meter, DVM,OTDR, Lan Tester)
- Ability to prioritize and focus on the priorities through to completion
What will help you on the job
Having completed previous Telecom, Electrical & Electronics training and background and having experience of O&G Telecommunications for offshore assets, the successful candidate will be very familiar with technology and equipment for the offshore communications requirements. A good organizer with a methodical and logical approach is complemented by a proactive, assertive, and respectful attitude towards the work environment and colleagues helping to achieve the common goal. The successful candidate will be able to problem solve and maintain focus in the busy environment whilst keeping control of multiple priorities. This will require very good communication and people management skills towards all colleagues and customers. The position can be physically demanding and so being able and willing to take on manual handling is important to achieve the results required.
